![]() They had to call my mom, who sided with me. My first day of school I refused to eat my hamburger (and I vaguely remember making mooing noises as my classmates ate their hamburgers in the school cafeteria). Of course I found out pretty quickly how things really were, and to be honest I was not the most passive grade-school vegetarian in the world. The ducks all had their own unique personalities, which each differed in ways from the chickens. Because of the constant contact with all kinds of animals I could see how they were individuals. ![]() My mom and my sister liked to ride horses and we couldn’t really afford it so volunteering was a way to earn horse privileges for them and to help the animals (for the record, I preferred reading and video games to riding horses). Not all at the same time of course! But we would take in stray animals and we would also volunteer at a local animal sanctuary. Dogs, cats, mice, rats, ducks, chickens, a turkey, horses, a goat, a ferret, various birds. We had lots of animals wherever we lived. I was also kept home until I entered 1st Grade and so did not fully realize that the way things were in my house was not the way things were generally. And the role of Human Beings was either to stay out of the way and let the animals live their lives, to offer help if and when one encountered an animal in distress, and to care for companion animals (in a way appropriate to their nature) as if they were furry siblings. For my mom animals were to be thought of as akin to children in terms of their mental lives. I was taught by my mom to believe in what I will call The Fundamental Equivalence of Flesh. It also made me revisit some of my younger self’s thoughts on vegetarianism.įor the record I was raised vegetarian. I think it holds up really well and is still (I think) the best from early Carcass. The album was Symphonies of Sickness by Carcass. However, I have been trying to write more about deeply personal issues and I recently revisited one of my favorite albums from way back in the late ’80’s. I don’t usually write too much about veganism/vegetarianism since it is a deeply personal issue (but see here, and here, and here). [unfortunately I accidentally deleted the video of our discussion, audio available here: ) My thanks to Ruth for such an enjoyable series of conversations and I hope viewing it is almost as much fun! She is well known for being generous with her time and her love of philosophical discussion. ![]() ![]() Below is an edited version of the various calls we made on Monday June 10th.Īnyone who knows Ruth personally will not be surprised. The call dropped 3 times but we kept going. After that I decided to just record the Skype call the way we had ended up doing the previous Friday. It worked for about half an hour and then something went screwy. I had our Skype call running through Open Broadcast Studios and was using that to stream live to my YouTube Channel. We got about 35 minutes in and the internet went out.Īmazingly Ruth agreed to try again and so we met the morning of Monday June 10th. We couldn’t get Google Hangouts to work (again!) but I had heard you could now record Skype calls so we tried that. Ruth agreed to do the interview again and so we tried to livestream it Friday June 6th 2019, almost a year after our first attempt (and since which I did many of these with almost no problems). When it didn’t I tried to record a video call and failed horribly (though I did record a summary of some of the main points as I remembered them). We tried to livestream our conversation July 4th 2018 and we spent hours trying to get the Google Hangouts Live to work. I started my YouTube interview/discussion series Consciousness Live! last summer and scheduled Ruth Millikan as the second guest.
